Stambaugh Captures Memorial Cup in Sprints at Limaland

(5/22/15) – The Memorial Day Holiday weekend has always been important on the racing calendar as major league open wheel and stock car events are among the biggest sports happenings around the world. Motorsports at all levels has followed that tradition and Limaland Motorsports Park does its part with the Annual running of The Memorial Cup races.

The k & L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders began the night with their 25-lap feature. Lima’s Mike Dunlap and Delphos veteran Shawn Dancer occupied the front row and they led the field to the green under near ideal weather conditions. Dunlap slipped sideways and an early caution period pushed him to the back of the field just two laps into the race.

Hard-charging Randy Hannagan quickly moved to the front from his outside row two starting position. Despite a series of cautions through the opening five laps, Hannagan, point’s leader Max Stambaugh and point’s runner-up Jared Horstman distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. That situation held to form with Stambaugh eventually reeling in Hannagan.

Stambaugh, from nearby Elida, executed a superb slidejob pass underneath Hannagan going through turn number two during a thrilling lap number seventeen. He was able to make the lead change permanent and stormed to the checkered flag and a $2,000 payout with the Memorial Cup. It was ‘Mad’ Max’s third career win at Limaland Motorsports Park.

“I figured I would save my car as long as I could,” explained the Hammons Motorsports driver. “I didn’t want my tires getting too hot. When we got into lapped traffic, then I felt it was time to really go and I got on the throttle as hard as I could.” Stambaugh believes the future this season is bright. “I think we are getting good about now, with a consistent car every night. Car owner Ron (Hammons) gave me another year after telling me he might be done.”

The 20-lap K & N UMP Modifieds were next up and the question of the evening was would anyone be able to stop Todd Sherman and his three straight feature race winning streak. Outside front row starter Mike Hohlbein of Cloverdale, Ohio seemed intent on carving out his best finish as he led the opening five laps of the ultra-competitive field of cars.

Hohlbein lost control of his vehicle coming into turn number four after five successful circuits. As he became sideways, fellow front runners Andy Galgoci and Hud Horton got collected into Hohlbein and it effectively took them out of contention.

The restart on lap number six saw Scott Bowersock of Wapakoneta, take over race leadership, although his journey to a career first Modified win wasn’t going to be easy. He would have to hold off Todd Sherman and it turned into a two-car duel between them.

Bowersock stayed tight to the bottom of the racing surface while Sherman decided to fly high near the wall with his trips around the ¼-mile layout. It was a winning strategy for Bowersock, although he thought it might not be. “I said earlier today I didn’t think anybody could beat him (Sherman),” said Bowersock afterward. “My car felt really good, and with a few laps to go I got a little loose off of turn two. I just told myself, don’t step off it now and here we are.”

The Budweiser Thunderstocks 15-lap feature was saddled with a series of caution flags as the track had become dusty and slick for the final race of the evening. A four-car pileup on the front straight early in the event notably ended the evening for Lima’s Chris Douglas and top contender Jordan Conover. It also involved first-time UNOH Racers Shayne Meadows and Alex Lacognata.

Throughout the cautions, pole starter and veteran Shawn Valenti calmly led the field around, although multi-time division champion Tony Anderson had moved into a contending runner-up position. Anderson was not going to concede this race to Valenti and he proceeded to create some thrilling action for the holiday minded fans.

“Sometimes with all of those cautions, it gets easy to overshoot turns, and I did a couple of times” confessed Anderson after the race. After a fourth restart of the feature on lap number 7, Anderson decided to root out Valenti on the inside and it produced some classic side-by-side stock car door panel rubbing action.

“I kept my car in the center with Shawn (Valenti) being fast on the high side,” said point’s leader Anderson. “I figured my only chance to get by was going low and it worked.” Anderson was able to pass Valenti on the inside during lap number 11, just before another caution flag was waved. The final four laps saw Anderson go unchallenged and he rolled to a second win of the season and 34th all-time at the facility.

Limaland Motorsports Park returns to action on Friday, May 29, with the16th Annual Steve Brown Memorial in the Budweiser Thunderstocks. Also NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader is scheduled to compete with the K & N Filters UMP Modifieds and the K & L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders will do battle. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. Racing begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.
